The Bowls North Harbour Men’s and Women’s Champ of Champ pairs was held on the weekend of the 29th & 30t April 2023
In the Women’s we had Gaye Horne and Joy Watkinson representing us. As per usual, Gaye was allocated her normal tough draw. First up were the favourites Elaine McClintock and Kerin Roberts from Orewa. The Orewa team were too strong for our Mairangi Bay team winning 25-11.
Elaine and Kerin went on to win their quarter and semi-finals. They then faced Helen Briant and Robyn Henderson in the final had a big win 27-6.
In the Men’s we had Tony Popplewell and Steve McGregor representing Mairangi Bay. They had a bye in the first round, and then played a strong Riverhead team of Grant Goodwin and Gordon Smith in the round of sixteen. Tony and Steve had a great win coming out the victors 18-14.
In the quarter final they played Shaun Bayne and David Pierce from Northcote winning 19-12.
In the semi-final they played the favourites, Neil Fisher and Sean Mulholland from Browns Bay. They started very well and had a 7-1 lead but then the Browns Bay team levelled at 8-all. They grabbed a four on the next end to lead 12-8, next end Fisher grabbed a two now 12-10. Unfortunately on the next end Tony came in a little heavy when holding one shot and instead of being 13-10 up it became 12-all. Fisher/Mulholland then played some excellent draw bowls and claimed the win 18-13.

Fisher and Mulholland continued their form into the final beating Charlie McDonald and Robbie McGrane from Milford 22-8.
The Champ of Champs continue with the Men’s and Women’s Triples on the 13th/14th of May. The Fours are on 20th/21st May and the 1-5 Singles on 27th/28th May. Keep an eye out on the Bowls North Harbour website for the venues and get along to support our Mairangi bowlers.
