Last Friday the first day of the Men’s and Women’s Cadness Cup was held.

All teams were playing at Hobsonville which particularly pleased the women. No trip to Manly.

The teams were:

Men         – Sharks – Ian Coombe, David Payne, John Gledhill and Tony Popplewell.

                 – Barracudas – Phil Chisholm, Leon Wech, Michael Jelley and Graeme McGregor

Women   –     Dolphins – Glenda Rountree, Judi Farkash, Lorna Donald and Rosemary Nicol.

–        Pearls –  Sheryl Wellington, Jan Gledhill, Robyn Pittams and Theresa Rogers.

–        Mermaids – Geraldine Wight, Flora Macdonald, Annie McGrath and Joy Watkinson.

The Sharks defeated Beachhaven 24-13, Browns Bay 25-19 and Omaha 20-18 to top their section.

Many thanks to David Payne who filled in late.

The Barracudas unfortunately had a section of only three, meaning only one team qualified, they had a bye first up and then played Hobsonville who had beaten Orewa in the first round.

Hobsonville played very well grabbing most of the bonus points and winning 20-12 to top the section.

The Sharks play the Birkenhead Bees in the quarter-final on Friday, starting at 9.00am at Hobsonville.

The Mermaids lost their first round in a close game to Orewa 15-16. They then lost to a very strong Birkenhead side 29-14 after being 12-11 up  and then lost to Warkworth 11-21.

So they did not qualify.

The Dolphins drew their first game with Hobsonville 17 all, then defeated Takapuna 25-11 and Warkworth 20-12.

So topped their section.

The Pearls defeated Orewa 26-9, then had a bye and defeated Mahurangi East 20-17 to top their section where only one team qualified.

Both teams have a bye on Friday in the first round of finals and will play semi-finals at 11.30am.

The Dolphins play the strong Birkenhead team and the Pearls will play the winner out of Takapuna and Orewa.

Supporters most welcome.
