The Mixed Fours Club Championship was held over the weekend.
We had fog on both mornings, virtually no wind with fine and warm conditions.
We had ten teams entered with a big thank you to Tony Stanaway, Graeme Storey, Queenie de la Croix, Annie McGrath and also Flora who filled in to prevent the bye.
The defending champions were Elaine McClintock, Michael Thomas, Hanaan Shahwan and Bruce McClintock. They had won the previous two years events.
Three rounds were played, 15 ends or 2 ¼ hours. Two and three winners qualified for finals day.
There were some close games and not so close games and a few surprises.
Five teams qualified:
Irene Donaldson, Glenda Rountree, Brian Rogers and Graeme McGregor.
Leon Wech, Sheryl Wellington, Julie Chhour and David Payne.
Phil Chisholm, Gordon Jenkins, Joy Watkinson and Theresa Rogers.
Elaine McClintock, Michael Thomas, Hanaan Shahwan and Bruce McClintock.
John Gledhill, Robyn Pittams, Bill Lowe and Muy Chhour. They had an upset win in Round one over the McClintock team 15-8.
With five qualifiers we had a bye round. John, Elaine and Phil got the byes.
First up in a quarter final was Leon playing Irene. This was a very good and close game, after nine ends Irene led 10-9.
But on the next end her team gave away a five, it was seven before Irene bowled her last bowl.
14- 10 to Leon and they added to their lead to take the win 19-11.
Semi-final 1 was between John and Elaine. Elaine’s team were very wary after their loss to them in the first round.
John’s team were slow to start and were down 2-7 after six ends. After ten ends they were down 5-9 but they then won the next four ends to lead 12-9.
Another upset was on the cards. In the last end, they were down three but Robyn drew the shot but then Michael took it out and stayed, now four down.
John then drew the shot with a great bowl but along came Elaine who took it out, great bowls by Michael and Elaine, John now five down.
His last bowl was a fraction heavy and ran through, Elaine’s team the winners 14-12. It was a great two days for John’s team, just missing out on the final.
Semi-final 2 was between Phil and Leon. Phil’s team started really well and after five ends led 11-0. Leon’s team started to win some ends but they were only getting ones.
After ten ends they were down 3-13. They won the next two ends 6-13 but a one to Phil on the next and Phil led 14-6. Next end Leon picked up a two but Phil came back with a one to win 15-8.
Final, Elaine’s team started well to lead 4-1 after three ends. Phil’s team then won five of the next six ends with a 4, 5, 2, 3 and then a 1. They lead 16-5.
Elaine then won next two ends with a 1 and a 2 but Phil came back with a 1 to lead 17-8.
A four to Elaine on the next put them five behind but a two on the last gave Phil’s team the win 19-12.
Well done to Phil, Gordon, Joy and Theresa, they were the form team over the weekend and combined so well with all of them contributing.
Many thanks to everyone who helped with the set up and putting away the gear.
Also to those helping in the kitchen.
Also to all the supporters.
Big thanks to Sheryl and Gerd for doing the draw and also to Gerd and Alan for running the event.
Mixed Pairs is the final championship event on the 18/19th April.
