Hi everyone and greetings from Alan Daniels, your Juniors Convenor.

Please find another Junior update.

Sunday 23rd May saw the running of the first of three Junior Winter Fours tournaments, this was the Sorrill Cup.  Mairangi had four teams entered.  Each team is allowed a maximum of two 1-8 year players but the combination is not compulsory.

It was not a pleasant day, with gusty, chilly winds all day and some light showers, all of which made for very difficult bowling.  The winners on the day were Wynn Gray’s team from Takapuna with four wins and 28 ends.  Second was the Mairangi team of David Payne, Gaye Horne, Joy Watkinson and Colleen Rice also with four wins but with four less ends.  Third was Adam Richardson’s team from Birkenhead with three wins, their only loss was to the Alan Daniels team.

The team of Alan Daniels, Mike Wilkinson, Michael Thomas and Allan Langley had two wins and a draw, with their loss coming against David Payne’s team.  The team of Kevin Robertson, Garth Partridge, Rick Dixon and Rick George had two wins on the day, with a loss against the Daniels team and win over the Horne team.  This was a blind draw tournament and unfortunately we had a couple of Mairangi teams play each other in a couple of rounds.

We have the same four teams, plus the team of Gayle Wilkinson, Russell Parkinson, Louise Ball and Rosemary Nicol entered for the second tournament the Latimer Cup on Sunday 11th July.  I have spoken to the organiser and offered to make up another team if they require. She will let me know.

The third tournament is the Stanaway Trophy up at Manly on Sunday 8th August, (for details click the link below).  I believe the same five teams are planning to enter for this event so if there is anyone else that would like to be in a team let me know and I will see if I can organize.

Congratulations to Gaye Horne and Joy Watkinson who beat Allan Langley and Flora Macdonald in the final of the club Junior 1-5 any combination pairs.  Joy played excellent lead bowls and her and Gaye  had a convincing win 23-6 and are the 2021 Champions.

Congratulations once again to Gaye Horne who along with Sheryl Wellington and Theresa Rogers won the Women`s Champ of Champ Triples.

This followed Sheryl and Theresa winning the Champ of Champ pairs the previous weekend.

This was an outstanding result by these Woman and caps off a very successful year for them.

The triples team beat Manly 13-8, Mahurangi in the semi-final 16-13 and then beat an Orewa team skipped by Elaine McClintoch 23-3, an amazing result against a such a top team.

Last Saturday was the Champ of Champs fours competition with the vastly experienced Caryl Miles playing with three 1-5 Juniors – Gaye Horne, Joy Watkinson and Louise Ball.  They beat Warkworth 19-14 in their first game and then played Birkenhead skipped by Ruth Lynch and beat them 17-12 in the quarter final.  In the semi they faced a strong Takapuna team skipped by Wendy Jensen and they went down 15-7. An excellent result for these Junior players and Caryl.

A similar result in the Men`s Champ of Champs fours with the Peter Orgias-skipped team along  with Alan Daniels year 8, Kevin Robertson year 6 and Allan Langley year 5.  They beat Manly 14-8 in their first game and in the quarter final they faced a strong team from  Helensville coming out winners 15-8.  The semi-final was against Takapuna, and while not out of the game, Takapuna held control for most of the game winning 13-7.

This coming weekend is the Champ of Champs 1-5 Men`s and Woman`s singles being held at Mahurangi and Warkworth.
Good luck to Judy Farkash and Allan Langley.

The weekend of June 19/20th is the running of the NHB Junior 1-5 singles which was rained out in early May.
We have Gaye Horne and Joy Finney playing in the Woman`s with Allan Langley and Jim Center playing in the Men`s.

Manly have advised there will be no Junior first year bowlers tournament this year due to a lack of available dates, which is unfortunate.

Glen Eden Bowls club are running the Great Western Showdown #4 for year 1-3 bowlers on Sunday June 13th.  I believe we have two teams entered and the event is now full.

Finally North Harbour bowls are running coaching during winter at Orewa.  This is open to anyone, but Juniors including, first year bowlers, are encouraged to participate.  The dates are Saturday June 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th.  Cost is $5 per session and you only need to rock up on the day.

Stay dry and warm during your winter bowls.
