The Men’s and Women’s Handicap singles were held over the weekend.

The weather was pretty awful with strong winds and some heavy showers over both days.

With the grass greens still closed due to  weather conditions, the events were played on the carpet green.

The men played qualifying on Saturday and finals on Sunday with the women playing qualifying on Sunday.

This was because we could not accommodate everyone on the carpet at the same time.

Entries were down with a number of players involved in reps and also some being away.

Eight women entered their event playing  three rounds of qualifying.

Gerd ran the event, the day before her hip replacement.

The top four players would qualify for the finals based on wins and differential.

Five players ended up with two wins with Jane Mackay being the one with the lowest differential, thus missing out. Hard luck Jane.

So the four qualifiers were Colleen Rice and Annie McGrath who will play one semi-final and Helen Aley and Rosemary Nicol in the other semi-final.

The final dates have yet to be finalised.

In the Men’s event sixteen entries were received with the top eight to qualify, also based on wins and differential.

They played three rounds in four sections which resulted in eight players having two or three wins and qualifying.

In the quarter-finals, Tony Trent lost to Gordon Jenkins 13-21, Leon Wech lost to Gerry Strydom 18-21, Barry McCrystal lost to Phil Chisholm 18-21 and Alan Daniels lost to Wayne Glogoski 17-21.

The closeness of the scores show that at least three of those games could easily finished with a different result.

In the semi-finals Gerry Strydom came out the winner over Gordon Jenkins 21-11 and Wayne Glogoski was victorious over Phil Chisholm 21-19 in a very close game.

The Final resulted in another close game with Gerry beating Wayne 21-15, the game was close all the way with Gerry coming out on top in the last two ends.

Congratulations Gerry Strydom.

Thanks to all the helpers on both days.

The women provided two extra markers for the men for the day and the men reciprocated the next day.

This weekend is the Men’s and Women’s Handicap pairs. Again we may be forced to make some changes with the grass greens still likely to be closed.
