Oh so close for our Pennants team as the final went down to the wire.

It was finals day at Browns Bay on Friday.

A lovely fine day but yes there was that wind again. Blustery and sometimes cool.

Our team was:

Mairangi Bay Sharks.

Team 1  –  Leon Wech, Jan Gledhill and Gordon Jenkins.

Team 2 –  Elaine McClintock, Bruce McClintock and Barry Baillie.

Team  3 – Sheryl Wellington, Allan Langley and Theresa Rogers.

Colleen Rice filled in for Barry in week two.

They played the Orewa Seagulls in the semi-final. The other semi-final was between Birkenhead and Riverhead.

This was a close game. Leon finished with a 16-8 win.

Sheryl came away with a 14-11 win. It took some time to complete the measure in the last end Mairangi Bay were looking for four shots to improve the differential.

After about 8 minutes it was declared as a three.

Meanwhile Elaine was waiting to play her last bowl as they were three down on the head, the result of Sheryl’s teams measure would dictate what shot she would need to play.

She played  a gentle bowl happy to go down three meaning the Sharks won the differential 38-37 and therefore winning the game 8-2.

Riverhead beat a very strong Birkenhead team 8-2.

To the final Mairangi Bay Sharks v Riverhead.

All three  Sharks teams were slow out of the blocks, Leon’s team slowly picked their game up and had a strong win 17-10.

Sheryl’s team also got going but went down 12-14.

Elaine’s team had a very bad start and were down 14-1. This was affecting the teams overall differential.

They clawed their way back, on the 13th end they were holding a four, the Riverhead skip went for the kill, he hit the jack with went forward on the Sharks bowl and rebounded back and stopped on a Riverhead bowl. With that four the score would have been 15-13 and a potential win to the Sharks on differential, but that shot gave Riverhead  a 16-9 lead and extended the differential to an unassailable lead.

Two very close games on the day, either of which could have easily had different results and sums up the game of pennants and the importance of the differential.

Well done to our team who represented the club with a great attitude which almost resulted in a finals win.

How good were, Leon Wech, Jan Gledhill and Gordon Jenkins who, had eight wins out of eight over the total tournament.

Very impressive, not easy at this level.

Many thanks to all the supporters that turned out on Friday, our most notable supporter was our centurion, John Miles.
