The Bowls North Harbour 1-5 Any Combination Pairs were played on the weekend 9th 7 10th April 2022
We had one team competing: Gaye Horne skipping and Michael Thomas leading.
They were a bit rattled early on with Michael arriving late during trial ends, Gaye needed to take some deep breaths and Michael had to find his way into the game.
They won their first game but then lost to a very good Orewa team who went on to win all three pool games.
Gaye and Michael were able to come back and win their last game and were able to secure one of the three next best qualifier spots.
On Sunday they had a difficult draw facing Matt Higginson and Paul Daniels. Paul, another top bowler with that surname lol.
Matt had won the 1-5 Bowls North Harbour Men’s singles the previous week, so he was in great form.
Michael was on time for the start, a big plus!! He started really well playing great lead bowls and out-bowling Paul Daniels. They were able to have a strong win 20-9, and as Lindsay Knight wrote, a notable and surprising win.
In the semi they were up against Andy Dorrance from Manly, who lost the Bowls North Harbour 1-5 singles to Matt Higginson last week, and Gideon van den Berg from Browns Bay.
Not sure about this rule that allows two 1-5 rep players to play together when they cannot find a fellow player from their own club??
Michael again started well and they were up 10 nil after 3 ends. They led to the fifteenth end before Andy and Gideon sneaked in front and Gaye and Michael eventually lost 23-20.
A top effort by our two players and just a great experience for Michael, this and last weekend. He is only in his second year of bowls. Gaye still has another year in 1-5 next year.
The final was Andy and Gideon against the BNH 1-5 Women’s Singles Champion Millie and her brother Chad Nathan from Birkenhead.
A close and exciting final with some great bowls and Andy and Gideon coming out the winners 12-10.
