 Winter Cup finals day was held last Friday on a fine but cool day.

The women were at Hobsonville and the men at Browns Bay.

The men had the top eight teams from section play qualify for a knockout finals round.

Mairangi Bay had two teams out of two qualify for the finals.

Marlins: Leon Wech, Gerry Strydom, John Lindsay and Graeme McGregor.  Sharks: David Payne, Phil Chisholm, Gordon Jenkins and Allan Langley.

Quarter-finals. The Marlins, defeated Browns Bay 26-17 and the Sharks, defeated Mahurangi 28-9, both strong wins.

Semi-finals. The Marlins, played a very good Hobsonville team and went down 10-29.  Sharks, played their rivals Birkenhead also going down 9-20.

Both teams did not play as well as they had previously, but saying that their opposition simply bowled better.

Final. Hobsonville were too strong for Birkenhead winning 29-11.

The women had two games to play in their round robin section play.

The teams were:  Pearls: Sheryl Wellington, Jan Gledhill, Collen Rice and Theresa Rogers.

Dolphins: Glenda Rountree, Flora Macdonald, Joy Watkinson and Jo Baxter.

Mermaids: Elaine McClintock, Hanaan Shahwan, Kerin Roberts and Rosemary Nicol.

Round 6,  the Pearls had a bye, the Dolphins had a win over Mahurangi and the Mermaids defeated Milford.

Round 7, the Pearls played the second placed Manly in a crucial game, the winner going through to the final. The Pearls came out on top winning 31-17.

The Dolphins lost to Birkenhead in a close game 21-18 but finished a creditable third in the section.

The Mermaids had a win over Orewa giving them second place in the section behind Takapuna who they had lost to on the first day. An excellent result.

Final.  Mairangi Bay Pearls v Takapuna. Robyne Walker, Lyn Calver, Adele Ineson and Jan Calcott.

The Pearls,  going for a Three peat.

It was a very good game, with both teams sharing the bonus points , Jan and Sheryl chipped in with critical bowls, the Pearls had the lead but a five on the ninth end gave Takapuna the lead.

Theresa and Colleen were on the money in the last three ends putting the Takapuna team under pressure and the Pearls came out the winners 24-17.

BACK TO BACK TO BACK wins for the  Mairangi Pearls, what an achievement!!!
