The Winter Cup bonus fours finals were held on Friday August 5th at Hobsonville.

We had two teams competing including the Mairangi Bay Sharks last year’s winners.

The Mairangi Bay Sharks were up against a strong Lionel Drew skipped team in the quarter-final.  The Sharks could not get their teeth into the game as Marty Short played excellent lead bowls and with David Eades also playing top bowls from three.  They struggled to get in the game and lost 21-13.

Well done to Peter Orgias, Ron Horne, Phill Chisholm and Bruce McClintock who replaced Allan Langley in the previous two rounds.(Allan deciding the sun in the Gold Coast was a better place to be).

Unfortunately no repeat win for the Mairangi Bay Sharks.

The Mairangi Bay Stingrays were also up against another strong Birkenhead side.  That team was skipped by Evan Thomas with Peter Nathan leading.  The Stingrays started well with Steve McGregor playing top lead bowls out playing Peter Nathan.  They were leading after eight ends but Peter Nathan found his mojo and put the pressure on.  Unfortunately there was no sting in the tail and Birkenhead won some big ends to win 25-15.

Well done to Wayne Glogoski, Kevin Robertson, John Lindsay and Steve McGregor for making the finals.

Thanks to John Lindsay who filled in for three weeks and then became a member of the team as he played some excellent bowls over qualifying.

Also have to mention Tony Trent who was the original skip but missed all three rounds due to being unwell and then catching covid.  Tony was there to support his team on Friday.

In the Semi- final, Orewa beat the Lionel Drew’s team by two points on the last end after Orewa led 17-1.
Evans team beat Warkworth 25-19 .

The final was one sided with Orewa winning 36-4.

Once again thank you to all the players who played in the four teams and to those that filled in each week.

Four teams was largest number of teams from one club which is a top effort.
