Hi Everyone, welcome to a 1 to 5 year bowler update.

The end of the summer season is fast approaching, so it is fortunate that we can still play bowls during winter.

Last weekend saw the running of the 1-5 North Harbour Men`s and Woman`s singles.

We had two men playing at Beachhaven, Jim Center and Michael Thomas. Jim stepped up late when it was announced that they had three byes. Thanks Jim.

In the Women’s played at Orewa, we had Hanaan Shahwan, Glenda Rountree and Gaye Horne.

It would have been nice to see a few more of our 1 to 5 Year bowlers entered in these events.

Michael Thomas had a good day winning all three of his section games to qualify for the quarter finals.

Jim Center unfortunately lost his three games. He started slow in all games and played his best bowls towards the end of the games but was unable to catch up.

Glenda had a great day winning two of her games and drawing the other against Sharon Parker, who like Glenda, is a Bowls North Harbour 1-5 rep.

Gaye and Hanaan were drawn in the same pool against the favourite Millie Nathan.

Millie won all her games as expected, beating Gaye and Hanaan. Gaye ended up with two wins beating Hanaan in a close game and qualified second for the quarters.  Hanaan ended up with three losses in a tough pool.

Unfortunately Gaye drew Millie again in a blind draw for the quarter final and lost to her with Millie playing great bowls.

Glenda drew a top Takapuna player Skye Renes in her quarter, going down 21-11. Still a great effort by Glenda and she loved the experience.

Millie went on to beat Judi Farkash from Takapuna 21-8.

Michael played Andy Dorrance from Manly in the quarter, he lost 21-14 but was happy with the way he bowled over the weekend.

Andy Dorrance went on to play Matthew Higginson in the final. In the semi Higginson beat Shaun Goldsbury from Takapuna, who regularly plays at our club, 20-19 in a close game.

The final was close and tense with Higginson winning 21-20 after a mammoth 32 ends.

Educations Session:
One of our most experienced umpires, Jean Ashby was looking to have a session on Etiquette and rules on the green with our new bowlers and also some of our not so new bowlers.

She was planning to do this next week or the first week of May, however, today a person she is staying with has come down with covid.  She is now isolating as from today and has subsequently booked a trip to Australia to see her grandchildren and will not be back until the 17th May.  We will organise to set this up when she gets back.  Apologies for the lateness of this being set up and also Jean is very apologetic for causing this to be delayed.

The plan is to do a session probably on a Monday afternoon and also a session on a Saturday morning for those that cannot make a Monday.

This weekend coming sees the running of the North Harbour 1-5 any combination pairs.  We have one team competing, Gaye Horne and Michael Thomas.  Good bowling to both on the weekend.

Coming up we have the following Club Championships:
April 23/24th Sat/Sun,  Woman`s 1-5 Singles.  Enter online. Winner will go through to the North Harbour 1-5 Champ of Champ singles.

April 30th Sat, Men’s and Woman`s 1st year singles. All 1st year bowlers should be playing in this. There is a trophy for this event, one for the Men and one for the Woman. Enter online.

A reminder you will need to wear whites or club shirts with white bottoms.

May 1st Sun, 1-5 A/C (any combination) pairs.  Make up a team and enter online.  Unfortunately some of our bowlers are playing in a Tournament at Pt Chev, others are having minor surgery or are away. We want to complete this tournament as there is a trophy to be presented at prize-giving.  Apologies to the players that will miss out.

Friday 13th May is our closing day and prize-giving.
There will be a roll-up at 1pm followed by afternoon tea and the prize-giving.

Saturday 14th May is the first day of winter bowls beginning with the haggle starting at 12pm.

All the events through the winter are mufti.  See the club website and the club book for the events that are happening.
