The men’s and women’s champ pairs were played over the weekend.

The men played on Knightsbridge and the women on Mayfair (that will be reversed for the triples this coming weekend).

All finals were played on Knightsbridge on the Sunday.

The weather was fine with a breeze coming in the afternoon on both days.

Two and three winners qualified for post section finals in both the men and the women.

The women had 10 teams entered including a few of our newer bowlers which was great to see.

Five teams qualified:

Glenda Rountree and Judi Farkash played Lorna Donald and Jodie Cottier in a quarter-final to eliminate the bye.

In a close game Glenda and Judi were too strong in the latter ends to win 16-12.

In the semi-finals Sheryl Wellington and Theresa Rogers played Jan Gledhill and Colleen Rice, winning  15-14.

A very close game with Jan and Colleen leading  early on but it was a game of two halves with Sheryl and Theresa fighting back to snatch the win.

In the other semi-final Muy and Julie Chhour played Glenda and Judi. Julie and Muy got away to a good lead but Glenda and Judi fought back and then took control to win 24-15.

Final: Sheryl and Theresa v Glenda and Judi.

After four ends it was 4 all, Sheryl/Theresa won the next two ends but Glenda/Judi won the next two, 9-8 to Sheryl/Theresa, after eight ends.

Sheryl/Theresa won three of the next five ends to lead 15-11 after 13 ends.

Sheryl/Theresa struck a blow claiming a four on the next two ends giving them a 23-11 lead with three ends to go.

Glenda/Judi took a three on the next end but needed big scores in the last two ends. Sheryl/Theresa claimed a 1 in the next end and the game was won 24-14 by Sheryl and Theresa.

Well done to Sheryl and Theresa, after a shaky start they found their rhythm to take a very good win.

A top performance by Glenda and Judi, they had to play an extra game first up, and they were in the final until the last few ends.

There were 14 teams entered in the men’s event.

Four teams played a quarter-final to eliminate the bye.

Barry Baillie and Graeme McGregor played David Payne and Phil Chisholm in one. This was a good game to watch with Graeme and Barry starting slowly to be down 1-5.

They the won six of the next seven ends to lead 13-6 after eleven ends. Unfortunately, for them, they only won one end of the last seven to go down 18-14.

In the other quarter-final Leon Wech and Michael Thomas played Graeme Storey and Glyn Taylor. Leon/Michael started well to lead 13-3 after eight ends. They both shared the next eight ends with Leon/Michael leading 19-11.

A 4 and a 3 in the last two ends gave Leon and Michael a 26-11 victory. Well done to them.

Murray Radojkovich and Brian Rogers and Ian Coombe and Gordon Jenkins both had the bye to the semi-final.

Murray/Brian who both played excellent bowls in the qualifying section on Saturday, left their form behind only winning three of the  sixteen ends.

Having said that Gordon was playing great lead bowls and Ian was being the Ian Coombe we know, winning 23-5.

In the other semi-final, Leon/Michael played David/Phil. This was similar to the other semi-final. David/Phil were playing very good bowls and nailing multiples, while Leon/Michael also struggled with their form.

Leon/Michael were down 17-4 after nine ends and went down 22-11.

The Final: Ian/Gordon v David/Phil. This was a very good final with excellent bowls by all bowlers.

Halfway through, nine ends it was 9 all. Five ends to Ian/Gordon four to David/Phil. Nothing between them.

Ian/Gordon won the next two ends but David/Phil then won the next two. 13-12 to David/Phil after thirteen ends.

Ian/Gordon drew level on the next end  but gave away a critical four on the fifteenth end and were down 13-17.

2 shots to Ian/Gordon to put them back in the game 15-17 with two ends to go.

David/Phil played those last two ends very well with a 2 and a 1 to take the win.

Interesting to note that both championship winners from last year, Elaine McClintock and Kerin Roberts and also Gerry Strydom and Bruce McClintock failed to qualify for post section.

Thank you to our president Tony Stanaway for presenting the trophies and to all the winners and runner ups and also to everyone who helped in running the event, setting up, marking the greens,  kitchen and the bar.
