Eighteen teams played four games of two bowl triples. Our ex meteorologist, Graham Ward, aptly described the wind as unpredictable, which made bowling challenging, particularly in the afternoon. Unfortunately, for the Mairangi club members, it was a great day for the visitors – nine of the ten visitors went home with tournament prize money!
First, with four wins, 33 ends was Lindsay Gilmore, Colin Rogan and Bruce McClintock.
Second, with four wins and 29 ends was Grant Keats, Bevan Smith and Ian Hardy.
Third, with three wins and a draw was Sheryl Wellington, Stuart Jamieson and Derek Brian.
The daily prize went to Peter Orgias, Lynn Calver and Gordon Jenkins, with two consecutive wins (one before lunch and one after lunch) and an impressive 19 ends (out of 24).
The tenth place prize went to Jan Gledhill, Colleen Rice and David Payne with two wins and 27 ends.
To round out the good day for our visitors, the lucky dip went to Wynne Gray, Rick Calver and Dennis Hale.
Given that the tournament was sponsored by Fairview and Settlers Lifestyle Villages, a humorous interaction from Tuesday’s bowling is fitting. The team I was in was playing on rink 9 and an Asian man came in and watched. He had no English but had a translation app on his phone. He spoke into his phone and then passed it over to us to read – “supreme happiness for elderly people”.
Special thanks to Fairview and Settlers Lifestyle Villages for sponsoring the day, and thanks to all those who helped out in the many ways that made the day successful and enjoyable.
