The final BNH Champ of Champ event was held over the weekend with the 1-5 singles held at Mahurangi East over the two days.
Our representatives were Julie Chhour and Barry Baillie.
Round 1 and the quarter-finals were played on Saturday with the semi-finals and finals played on Sunday.
Julie played Julie Marshall from Browns Bay in round 1 and had a very strong win 21-9.
In her quarter final she defeated Michelle Harris from Hobsonville with another strong win 21-10.
Semi-final vs Stacey McDonald (Milford).
Julie faced Stacey McDonald from Milford in a high quality semi-final. Both players produced some excellent bowls in a closely fought contest.
The match was evenly poised at 12-11 in Julie’s favour before she began to take control. Stacey continued to battle hard but Julie’s consistency
and accurate drawing saw her pull away in the latter stages to secure a well-earned 21-16 victory and a place in the final.
Final vs Rebecca Bronson(Takapuna).
In the final Julie met Rebecca Bronson who is well known for her bowling in Auckland.
Rebecca bowled exceptionally well and put Julie under pressure throughout the match.
Despite Julie’s determined effort and some excellent bowls of her own, Rebecca maintained her composure and capitalized on key opportunities.
Rebecca went on to win the final 21-6, claiming the title after an outstanding display.
Julie can nevertheless be proud of her tournament, reaching the final and playing some excellent bowls along the way.
In the men’s event Barry Baillie, whom seems to like tough draws, faced up to the favourite in Shaun Goldsbury from Manly in round 1.
Barry competed very strongly and more than held his own. It was a long game, there was no time limit and the game lasted almost three hours.
Barry was leading 20-18 but unfortunately dropped a three and Shaun took the win 21-20.
Could have easily gone the other way.
Shaun went on to win the final against Navind Singh from Hobsonville, in another close game 21-20.
Well done to both our players who represented the club extremely well.
Unfortunately for Julie this is her last chance, as next year she moves out of the 1-5 ranks. For Barry he will get another opportunity next year, I believe Shaun will also be moving out of the 1-5 ranks.
Many thanks to David Payne for his report on Julie’s semi and final.
And thanks to our supporters who made the trip up. A big thanks to Mahurangi East who hosted the event so well over the weekend.
