Hi Everyone,
Sunday saw the running of the Phil Stanaway Cup fours at Manly Bowling Club. As previous, each team is allowed a maximum of two 1-8 year players.

It was a cool, windy day with showers in the morning and rain in the afternoon .

Each team played two games on each green, a very fast green on the carpet in front of the clubhouse and a very slow, old and worn carpet to the side of the clubhouse.

Mairangi Bay had six teams entered which again is a fantastic achievement.

Three teams ended up with four wins, the winning team was the strong local Manly team skipped by Val Ager, Keith Benson, Kevin Rainsford and Andy Dorrance.
Second was Birkenhead and third Orewa.

Our teams results:
Tony James, Ron Horne, Stuart Mackay and Bob Mullen had three wins and a narrow loss to Kevin Robertson`s team – Kevin denying them a fourth win and third place overall, with his last bowl.

Alan Daniels, Mike Wilkinson, Michael Thomas and Allan Langley had three wins losing their last game to Waimauku. Michael Thomas bowled extremely well on the slow green in the afternoon.

Phil Chisholm, Graeme McGregor, Judy Farkash and Theresa Rogers also had three wins. They lost their third game to Northcote, 8 all on the last end, Phil’s team holding shot, the opposing skip drew right to the jack to take the win.

Russell Parkinson, Gayle Wilkinson, Rosemary Nicol and Louise Ball had a win and a draw in the morning but lost both games in the afternoon. Their third game was the battle of the Wilkinson’s with Mike coming out the winner this time.

While Kevin Robertson, Garth Partridge, Rick Dixon and Rick George had only the one win, they enjoyed their last bowl victory over Ron’s team, hopefully they will be talking to each other tomorrow.

David Payne, Gaye Horne, Joy Watkinson and Colleen Rice managed one draw against Bob Telfer’s Takapuna team. They lost to the third placed Orewa team and also lost to winners Manly on the slow Green.

It was a very difficult day for bowls but an excellent learning curve for some of our young bowlers.

Highlight of the day was Jane James’s amazing chocolate cake at lunchtime.  Many thanks Jane for the cake and your support during the day.

This event was the last Junior 1-8 event for Gayle Wilkinson, Mike Wilkinson, Alan Daniels, Tony James and Ron Horne.

Finally a big Thank you to Rick George who has initiated the 1-5 Casual challenge tournament for the new season.

All 1-5 bowlers should have received an email from Rick with the details. It looks like being a fun tournament and an opportunity to play regular games of singles which are not normally available.  I believe there are 13 or 14 names down already.

Regards,

Alan Daniels
