A beautiful Autumn day on Saturday for the Men’s 1st year singles.

We had two entrants, both who had been playing regularly in haggles, Thursday pairs and triples and other tournaments: Bill Lowe and Roger Potter.  With all this experience a competitive competition was expected.

With only two players this meant a best of three games, first to 21 or two hour time, with the first to two wins to take the trophy.

In the first game Roger started out strongly consistently getting close, Bill struggled with his line and length and Roger raced away with the win 21-5.

Game two, pressure was on Bill to respond.
He did immediately winning the first end with a one and then took a four on the next, game on!
Bill lead 13-2 in the middle stages, and the question was asked, was this the same Bill that played in the first game.
Roger started to find his length and started to chip away at Bill’s lead.
Bill still had the lead at 17-15 but Roger picked up a two to make it 17 all.
Bill was hanging tough and picked up a one on the next end, but Roger came back with a one to level on the next.

There was enough time to play one more end. 18 all.  The crowd size had built in anticipation .

What a great end it was with Roger drawing the shot, Bill responded with an even better shot to hold a small margin.  Roger was a foot short with his next bowl and Bill also, it was a very close head.

Roger came in to the head and knocked up his short bowl which rolled slowly to the jack, taking the shot.  Bill had one bowl left again he was into the head but finished slightly behind Rogers bowl.

Two wins to Roger and he is the new 1st year Champion.  CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

What an excellent game it was and a great effort by Bill .  It was played in a great spirt .

A big thankyou to Alan Daniels for marking both games and to David Pearse  for running the tournament  and the club members that came down to watch.
